What is Dota 2
DOTA2 is an extremely popular MOBA game. It was developed and released by Valve. MOBA stands for multiplayer online battle arena. Dota2 is a mixture of a real time strategy game and action roleplaying game. In DOTA2 there are 10 players in total who play with five on each team. Each player picks from a pool of characters called heroes before the game starts.
The Hero Pool
Every hero in the pool has a main attribute. The attributes are Strength, Agility and Intelligence. All of the attributes do something different during the game. Strength increases your hit points. Agility increases your attack speed. Intelligence increases your mana pool. Every point in that attribute also increases the damage they do when they attack.
Every hero has four different abilities. You level up throughout the game. As you level up you gain increased stats points. However, you also get an ability point each time you level. So, you get to choose what abilities you level up first. There are three regular abilities and an ultimate ability. The ultimate ability can only be increased at level 6, 11 and 16.
Every hero has a different role that they can play. There are a lot of different roles that vary in complexity, so here are a few of them. There are nukers that do a lot of damage with their spells and are very good at killing enemies quickly. There are disablers whose abilities primarily focus on making enemies unable to act, and there are carries that do a lot of damage late in the game with their auto attacks.
Pros
DOTA2 is free to play with everything that is relevant to gameplay being accessible immediately. That means that you can play the full game without ever having to pay for anything. The game also has a lot of depth, which makes it have a lot of replay ability. You can play two different games of Dota2 and have entirely different outcomes and scenarios because of lane setup and the hero selection.
Cons
There is a huge learning curve for the game. Since there is so much depth to it, those who don't have a lot of experience with the game or the MOBA genre will have a very hard time getting into it. You can play the game every day for a week and still end up in situations where you don't know what's going on. The games are also very long. Every game usually goes to at least 30 to 40 minutes. If you're losing, it can be extremely frustrating to keep playing. Overall DOTA2 is a great game, but it isn't for everyone. There is a lot of fun to be had playing it, but the amount of knowledge required to play it well can be extremely difficult for some people to overcome.
